Name: Julie Leymarie
Profession: Co-founder, Le Mill
Born: Paris, January 24th 1979
On her first steps in fashion: “Definitely because of my mum. She is from Chile and arrived in Paris when she was 12 years old. She is a combination of South American femininity and Parisian elegance, having worked at Chanel for over 40 years. When I was 7 years old, my room was full of the amazing images…Claudia Schiffer and Christy Turlington, from Karl Lagerfeld’s early days in the ’80s, when the logo was so loud! I even used to miss school to go to the fashion shows.
On her personal style: “Though my mum would favour the classic Chanel skirt suit and beautiful Haute Couture full look, I prefer to mix styles and brands. For instance, an Acne skirt with a Sabyasachi embroidered top; vintage Chanel jacket with The Row leather pants; Rick Owens leather jacket on a lacy Stella McCartney skirt.”
On wardrobe staples: “I used to wear heels only and plenty of black in Paris. Now, between Morocco and India, I wear flats, long skirts and much more colour. I also discovered ethnic jewellery in India that I love to mix with more edgy looks.”
On taking a chance on India: “It’s been one of the happiest accidents of my life. I have travelled a lot and lived in Spain and South America. I was in love with Latino countries and always wanted to go back with my husband. I received the opportunity to come to India with L’Oréal and I fell in love with the country and its culture immediately. Love at first sight!”
On Mumbai vs Marrakech: “What I love in Marrakech – and what I long for in Mumbai – is the nature, the space. What I love about Bombay is the energy and chaos. I am weirdly much more inspired and stimulated by the chaos than by nature!”
On favourite escapes close to Mumbai: “I used to go to Goa very often with my husband and my two little girls. We love La Plage in Ashwem. We used to go every day from breakfast to dinner!”
On the words she lives by: “My French family motto is the Latin phrase ‘Etiam si omnes, ego non’ which means ‘Even if all others… I will not’. I love thinking that I’m not living like everyone else. I am so proud of having left Paris to undertake new adventures with family between India and Morocco, which is quite unusual!
On the one hobby she still pursues: “Picking things from my mum’s wardrobe!”
On treasured possessions: “Rick Owens jacket, Chanel navy Croco bag, my collection of Pierre Hardy shoes.”
On her favourite way to unwind: “With a warm bath, listening to Angus and Julia Stone.”
On her bucket list: “Skiing in the Alps with my family for Christmas.”
On her shelf: “Lolita by Nabokov, All Baz Luhrmann films, and The Wizard of Oz
On her signature perfume: “M7, the men’s perfume by YSL.”
On her comfort food: “Pasta, pasta, pasta. I also love to put Nutella on a good French Comté!
