It all started in early 2016, when Justin Bieber’s ‘What Do You Mean’ got a redux in the hands of Canadian YouTuber Tronicbox, which promptly went viral. In October, he turned his attention to Ariana Grande’s addictive track ‘Into You’. He made it worthy of a mixtape we might have borrowed (ok, stolen) back in the day. Ditto for Katy Perry, Zara Larsson, MAGIC! and Fifth Harmony. Also, who would’ve thought Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ set over Maroon 5’s ‘Sugar’ would be just as sweet?
Just when we thought this ’80s fever was on the wane, the new year opened with a redux of Rihanna and Calvin Harris’s ‘This Is What You Came For’ – this time YouTuber Saint-Laurent took on the challenge, and the power ballad spread like wildfire on Facebook. You’ve got to take a minute to admire the artwork too: that shock of permed hair, juicy leotards, and padded shoulders. (PS: Here's how to revisit '80s fashion the right way.)
If you have some catching up to do, we put them all in one neat place:
