With an abundance of styles available all over, tops help women ascribe to their individual style effortlessly. Even with a small rotational of bottom wear, tops are a versatile piece of clothing that can be styled in various permutation combinations.
Soon after women were freed from the traps of corsets and boning, dresses were replaced by separates. During the roaring ‘20s, the jumper was invented- a blouse cut from cotton or silk that was designer with a sailor collar. Another trending style from the 1920s was a low-cut V-neck shirt with an attached chemisette. Knitted styles and feminine blouses with long bow ties became the go-to for women in the '30s. The war and it’s repercussions made designers skip the nylons and silks, and reach out to rayon and linen military shirts. The ‘50s saw the liberation of the shoulders- sleeveless styles took charge during this decade.
The time for cottage core and psychedelic patterns on shirts came during the 1960s. This decade also gave us the peasant blouse and the tunic style that we love as casual tops today. In the 1970s and ‘80s, Avant-Garde fashion took over. It was the era of space-like fashion where the tops were designer with boxy silhouettes, shoulder pads, geometric detailing from fabrications like suede, leather, vinyl and plastic. 1990s saw the commercialization of fashion with monograms and brand monikers being emblazoned on the clothing. T-shirts, sweaters and casual button-downs all came printed with a bold symbolization of designer labels. On the other hand, the ‘90s also witnessed the emergence of the crop top.
Clothing in the 21st century is meant for way more than just it’s primal function. It is a way of expressing one self, of using different styles to tell different stories. They are potent to creating a tailored perception of the wearer. What the modern Indian woman needs in terms of designer tops is a blend of timeless essentials and statement pieces- classic white shirts and solid crop tops but also styles that ascribe to current trends.
