Olivia Dar ’s long career has led her to settle in India for over two decades.

After studying cinema in Paris and Montreal, she took a gemmology course in Jaipur which sparked a lifelong passion for Indian craft and artisanal traditions. She began her obsession with Indian embroidery when she was working in the world of couture. Olivia Dar settled in India and began her career designing embroideries and accessories for haute couture labels such as Christian Lacroix. In 2011, she founded her eponyomous brand of hand-embroidered jewellery, clothing and accessories, combining traditional craftsmanship with a modern aesthetic. She left the high fashion world to create her own brand, explore her own aesthetic as a designer, and elevate traditional Indian craft by adapting and translating local techniques into contemporary design.

All their embroiders come from Jharkhand, UP, Bihar and Bengal and have all learned from an uncle or a father. They have been doing it for a long time and they’re quite talented. The embroiderers come from a “shaadi” background, so they would work on lehengas and wedding outfits initially. All of Olivia Dar ’s embroiderers have a wide range of techniques they know with an almost masterful hand on the craft. Olivia Dar jewellery tries and takes these techniques and modernizes them.

They aim to provide a safe and comfortable workspace for their artisans to practice their craft, and every Olivia Dar piece is finely and carefully crafted in their studio. The embroidery is done by their male artisans and the finishing by their female artisans. As a woman-owned and run company, Olivia Dar jewellery is especially attuned to creating a safe and supportive work environment for their female employees.
