She studied fashion at a college in Nagoya and went on to work for a large apparel company that created clothing for a range of mass labels. Chitose Abe worked with Japan’s key player Comme des Garçons. This is where she absorbed a vast knowledge of pattern making and creative conceptualization for luxury fashion. After having started off as a pattern maker, her talents were soon recognized by Rei Kawakubo and Chitose was promoted to a position that was more involved in the design process. Here she also met her husband, a fellow pattern maker, and shortly after gave birth to a daughter. Chitose Abe quit her job at Comme des Garçons to raise her daughter.

As is the state of all creative geniuses, Chitose found the lack of a creative outlet very overwhelming. Her husband convinced Chitose to pursue her dreams. A play on her maiden name, Sacai was initially set for more humble goals. It came into existence with a handful of knitwear options. But the fashion-forward of Japan helped Sacai clothing achieve it’s cult status. The label became an esoteric name amongst the elite of Japan who guarded this secret for almost a decade.

Sacai’s distinct and intelligent designs soon enough began gaining traction amongst international buyers, giving way to their Paris debut in 2009. This year, Chitose also launched Sacai’s menswear line. Since their international debut Sacai has made leaps across the fashion terrain.
