The 101 on Jacquemus
Designer Simon Porte Jacquemus has taken the fashion world by storm. Get to know him better – especially now that the French fashion designer has made his India debut with Le Mill!
He has humble roots…
Born in 1990, in Mallemort, a small town in the South of France, Simon Porte Jacquemus spent his childhood in the apple fields run by his family. His parents were both farmers. Now if you thought fashion and farming don’t mix, he’ll remind you that farmers are, in fact, the most poetic people. “(They’re) obsessed with beauty. My father had a band and would dress up in the evenings, for his performances, wearing these amazing big boots and singing rock,” he recalls fondly.
He has a deep love for fashion…
Jacquemus didn’t know the first thing about fashion when he moved to Paris. Once he started working at the Comme des Garçons store, he took a deep dive and even went so far as to create his own collection after hours. At only 19, he had a label to his credit.
His breakthrough moment…
In 2009, a year after his mother passed away, he launched Jacquemus – a label launched in her memory, with her maiden name. It would soon take Paris Fashion Week by storm with its interpretation of classic Breton stripes, conversation starting play on proportions, exaggerated tailoring. It was soon apparent that he had a story to tell with every passing collection.
He wholeheartedly embraces social media…
Simon Porte Jacquemus’s love for storytelling is most apparent on Instagram. But if you turn back a few years, you’ll find he was an active blogger as a teen. Keen to share stories every week. His first ever collection played out on Facebook, the way his vision now plays out on Instagram – spontaneously!
His vision for Spring Summer 2019…
“With every collection, I’m finding the right balance between conceptual and spatial and something that’s wearable,” Jacquemus shared with Vogue. This summer is sensual, with breezy dresses, plunging necklines and hip-grazing hems. After striking internet gold with the La Bomba straw hats, this season he gives – an equally oversized – Le Baci raffia tote.
