All the reasons we love the sustainable label: Kassl Editions
In an age of global climate crisis, sustainability is finally more than a buzzword for designers in 2020. The Amsterdam based label, Kassl Editions is making waves with their timeless, sustainable design, one Fisherman coat at a time. The fashion collective was started by restaurateur and concept store owner, Ilse Cornelissens, and her husband Tim van Gelovan along with multi-designer Bart Ramakers.
Taking one item and sprucing it up for every season seems like a tell for a larger market movement. Several new-age Instagram brands have engineered a similar strategy to find a cult following. Think Mansur Gavriel and the bucket bag, Cult Gaia and the thong sandal, Staud and the summer dress. In a similar vein, Kassl’s fisherman jacket with its sloping shoulders and metallic buttons has gained cult status with fans like Jennifer Lawrence and Katie Holmes buying into the uniform-like outerwear.
We unpack 5 reasons you will love Kassl’s modern classic outerwear:
To solve your everyday conundrum of which bag to match which outfit, the brand serves up a large puffer bag in the same material as the coat. It’s water-resistant, durable, pillow-shaped, big enough to carry your world with you, and comes with a removable shoulder strap. Need we say more?
The coats are made in collaboration with a manufacturing company in Kassel, Germany (hence, the name, Kassl Editions). The company is known for the utilitarian uniforms it provides to Germany’s national fire brigade and police force.
If you find yourself thinking but how much can they do with one measly jacket! This is exactly what the triumvirate behind the label aims to change. Their oil-coated cotton jackets come in all possible iterations. Think reversible shearling coats, longer belted waxed cotton versions with detachable hoods and contrasting sleeves, lightly padded puffer jackets, and longer woolen overcoats (some with blanket-like scarves to snuggle in).
The premise that a coat can be reversible, with detachable hoods et al makes a strong case for wearing the same thing in many different ways, in turn, creating a sustainable movement. By creating a single, versatile garment, Kassl is trying to push its customers to buy less and invest in one well-made garment that will last you a lifetime.
Across glossy olive green, to cool calming lavender, there are more ways than one to wear the Kassl fisherman jacket. We’re looking at you for inspiration J-Law and Katie Holmes.
