All Things Green: The New Symbol of Luxury

The hue gained its It-colour status when Bottega came up with its new signature version in a striking deep tone, or perhaps it gained momentum with Billie Eilish’s famous lime locks seen on red carpets and momentous occasions. But wherever it may have started, it still remains as the big colour to invest in. Balenciaga, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton have championed the colour on the runway, but there’s also high-fashion accessory names like The Attico whose heeled and booted spin with the colour has gained traction with fashion insiders.

From the recent AW22 shows, Proenza Schouler, Jil Sander, Prabal Gurung, and Roberto Cavalli are just a few of the many high-voltage names that have showcased iterations in the colour. Street style of late is increasingly remembering the 2000s and what the cool kids would wear.

Bella Hadid in a Green Sweatshirt Dress

Take Bella in her slime green sweatshirt dress, for instance, the model has been a risk-taker who has dictated trends, which is why the style icon is championed by the edgier names in the designer fashion index to represent their clothing aesthetic. The electric green colour she wears is daring, and it goes to show that the very definition of luxury has changed today. It's edgy rather than staid.

Fashion’s favourite It-girls like Emily Ratajkowski, Hailey Bieber and Katie Holmes were also spotted wearing the colour as the statement piece of the outfit. This could be an after-effect– the “roaring twenties” sensibility that people had predicted would be the result of staying indoors in lockdown or just a culmination of the symbolic representation the colour stands for– sustainability, climate change– all the key terms that help luxury not get cancelled. But the colour also represents a free-spirited attitude, a little reckless for office, but absolutely edgy, playing on the ugly-chic factor, that instantly elevates you to the status of fashionably aware. Luxury in a manner is all about the free-spiritedness of being ostentatious, where anything goes and is allowed, which is where the two areas of street style and luxury meet today with this colour.
