Pavitra Rajaram on Interior Design Rules She Never Follows
Whether it’s a supposedly ‘forbidden’ colour palette, an overly obeyed decorating mantra or an aesthetic that is devoutly deemed to be inappropriate, sometimes there are simply too many assumed conventions when it comes to the world of interior design. Which is why we’ve asked Pavitra Rajaram (@teaonthebluesofa), founder and creative director of Pavitra Rajaram Design (@pavitrarajaramdesign) as well as Design Director at Asian Paints, to share the design ‘rules’ she deliberately chooses to ignore.
Rule: Go easy on colour
“Maximizing colours in interior design is important because it adds depth, interest, and personality to a space. It doesn’t have to feel like chaos!”
Never be afraid to add some colour
Rule: Don’t combine aesthetic styles
“Combining classical and contemporary elements in interior design allows us to create unique and personalized spaces that feel authentic.”
Curate your space to make it feel more like you
Rule: Don’t use dark colours because it will make the room appear small
“Using dark colours on walls in interior design can create a sophisticated and dramatic ambiance, and act as a great backdrop for art pieces!”
The key to moody colours? Great lighting always!
Rule: Don’t mix patterns
“Pattern on pattern adds layers of warmth to a space and is often a great way to create the right amount of intrigue.”
Pattern play for the win
Rule: Out with the old, in with the new
“Creating a home you love is all about collecting pieces that bring you joy. Rather than fixating on today’s trends, focus more on curating your space to feel authentic to you.
The perfect blend of old and new
Rule: Expensive objects should be seen and not touched
“Nothing feels colder than a room that can’t be lived in! Let everything be functional - the joy of living with objects is being able to use them.”
Prioritise functionality
