Why We’re Crushing on Nanushka, The Hungarian Label You Need To Know
If there’s a label synonymous with supple, butter-soft vegan leather today, it’s Nanushka. Pioneering sustainable fashion, the local boutique turned Instagram sensation rose to cult-status when its New York Fashion Week spring/summer 2019 show got rave reviews.
Hailey Bieber wearing a Nanushka set
From Hailey Bieber and the KarJenners in LA, to the ultimate Parisian cool girl Camille Charriere, the label’s part of every cool girl’s closet. Sumptuous fabrics with a green and sustainable finish, the Budapest-based label checks all the right boxes. We get to know the brand better:
The Maker and The Muse
Founder and Creative Director, Sandra Sandor
London College of Fashion graduate Sandra Sandor founded her namesake label in 2006. She was called Nanushka by her father growing up, which is where the moniker comes from.
Her source of inspiration? Her homeland Hungary nestled in Central Europe. The designer aims to create harmony between eastern and western cultures in her collections.
The Wearers
Alia Bhatt in a Nanushka dress
After selling exclusively to fashion-purveyors in Budapest for the first few years, the designer embarked on a global growth strategy and has successfully infiltrated our Instagram feeds. Bollywood celebrities aren’t immune to the label’s charms either. From Alia Bhatt’s summer dress to Kangana Ranaut’s red Nanushka number in Cannes, and Deepika Padukone’s louche satin set - fans are everywhere.
The Vibe
The label describes itself as ‘a contemporary house for the modern human’. With its simple feminine silhouettes, Nanushka elevates functional clothing. The colour palette treads neutral territory making it a must-have for sophisticated tastes (and the gaping hole left by Phoebe Philo’s Celine).
Cult Pieces
The ‘Hide’ vegan leather puffer jacket as seen on Camille Charierre, and the ‘Lubo’ croc-embossed belt bag.
The accessories Apart from the fan-favourite Lubo fanny, Nanushka has a collection of essential bags handcrafted with leather (vegan, of course). From pleated knot-style clutches to roomy two-tone shopping bags and elegant belt bags, there’s something for everyone.
The ‘90s favourite, now making a comeback, the scrunchies by Nanushka belong as much on your hair as your wrist.
