French luxury fashion house Courrèges was founded in 1961 by French master couturier André Courrèges and played a pivotal role in the modernization of the female silhouette. The decade of experience he gained as a young designer at Balenciaga, mastering the cut and construction of garments, greatly influenced his design style and aesthetics. In the rapidly changing luxury fashion industry where most luxury houses are influenced by trends, Courrèges still stands faithful to its house codes of extreme simplicity and geometric modern designs that it was built on all those years ago.
Referred to as the “Father of Space Age Fashion”, Courrèges’ career at his namesake label took off at a time when the Western World was embroiled in the space craze. His groundbreaking
1964 “Space Age” collection included many fashion firsts. Unlike other French couturiers' collections, André’s collection included A-line minidresses and double-breasted coats with belts as well as trousers which were illegal for women to wear in France at that time. Along with British fashion designer Mary Quant, he is also credited for the invention of the mini skirt.
Along with innovative designs, Courrèges opted to use fabrics that the fashion world had never seen before. Plastics such as vinyl and synthetic fabrics such as lycra were some of the materials greatly used by the designer. The designer drew much of his inspiration from sportswear, creating garments in knit and stretch fabrics which is clearly visible in the collections of the brand even today.
Courrèges would go on to dress some of the fashion and entertainment biggest names of his time including Jacqueline Kennedy, Catherine Deneuve, and Bridgette Bardot.

Andre Courrèges' modern designs were often paired with low-heeled white ankle boots which came to be known as the Courrèges boot and later evolved into the popular go-go boot as we know it. Courrèges created some of 60’s fashion's most iconic looks. He paired shorter skirts with leather calf-high boots which gave a sense of confidence and flamboyance to the wearer. 1970s supermodel Pat Cleveland picked up a pair of square-toe shoes Courrèges with the first cash she made. She said, “Those shoes made me look like the coolest girl in the room,” she recalled. “I hung out with the Beatles, Mick Jagger… When I see a square toe now, I think magic.”
