In 1993, Jesmina Zeliang made a casual attempt to reimagine Naga textiles with one weaver and, two decades later, went on to create a brand that showcased
"MadeinNagaland" textiles to customers not only within the country but to a very discerning clientele in several countries.
Textiles by Heirloom Naga are woven exclusively by women and represent the exquisite skills of the Naga weavers who took to weaving in between primary agriculture & other household chores. Being secured with a regular and healthy income, most of them soon took up weaving professionally, and they, in turn, passed on their skills to the younger generation of weavers.
Heirloom Naga intends to keep Nagaland's Handicrafts alive through the loin-loom weaving craft. It offers livelihood opportunities to a large community of weavers in the rural areas of Nagaland and adjoining states.
The brand's cultural custodians work within the confines of their own homes at their own pace and take total ownership of their loom. Heirloom Naga brings doorstep employment to women and encourages them to be stakeholders in continuing their traditional legacy.
Heirloom Naga aims to combine traditional motifs with a contemporary context, revive ancestral skills, and define a new approach to Naga Handicraft. By innovating on existing Naga textiles, Heirloom Naga first launched braided tassels as a value addition to soft furnishings and started a trend in the weaving sector of Nagaland. They also take pride in reintroducing cotton and eri silk into the handloom sector, as there was a total shift to other artificial fibers, thus creating an awareness of natural fibers.
